Does the European Accessibility Act apply to us?
Five questions on your sector, your customers, your size and your existing contracts. The answer shows its reasoning step by step. This is not legal advice.
Five questions
The rules the answer follows are set out below the questions.
How the answer is worked out
- Sector. The Act (Directive 2019/882) covers services sold to consumers in e-commerce (the full customer journey, on websites and apps), consumer banking, telecoms, transport booking and information, e-books and audiovisual media services. It also covers some hardware products, which this tool does not assess.
- EU consumers. It applies to products and services sold to EU consumers, regardless of where the company is based.
- Microenterprises. Service providers with fewer than 10 employees and €2 million or less in turnover are exempt. Both conditions must hold.
- Timing. The Act has applied since 28 June 2025. Service contracts agreed before 28 June 2025 may continue unchanged until they expire, for at most five years, so until 28 June 2030; products already in use may also be used until then. New contracts must comply now.
The technical standard is EN 301 549, which incorporates WCAG 2.1 AA. Enforcement is national. Read the full summary on laws and standards.
